The Fine Print Checklist 7 money traps they hope you skip

Two pages. For each trap: the line they hid, how it works, and the one thing to do about it. Print it and keep it near your bills.

Free. The checklist arrives after you confirm your address, then one email a week from the Eagle, under two minutes to read. Unsubscribe any time. We use your address only to send these and never sell it. Privacy.

What’s inside

Seven traps. All legal. All printed where you weren’t expected to look.

  1. The minimum payment

It was sized so the balance barely moves. In the 1970s it was about 5% of what you owed. By 2000, about 2%. There is a better number already printed on your statement.

  2. “No interest for 12 months”

Not 0% financing. The interest runs from day one, and finishing $1 short at the deadline charges you all of it, back to the purchase date.

  3. Pay in 4, four at a time

Each plan looks tiny. Nobody shows you the total, most never reach your credit report, and one missed draft can cost you two fees.

  4. The seven-year car loan

The dealer sells you a payment, not a price. The extra years are where the cost hides, and where you owe more than the car is worth.

  5. The free trial that renews itself

A paid subscription with a 30-day fuse. No federal one-click cancel rule is in force today, so the burden is on you.

  6. The $35 “courtesy”

Overdraft protection is a loan you never applied for, at the most expensive price in banking. It can be switched off.

  7. Mortgage insurance that outlives its purpose

It protects the lender, not you, and nobody is paid to remind you when you can drop it. There is a date you can put on your calendar.

  8. Get all seven, with the fix for each

The number to pay, the call to make, the date to write down. Two pages, free.
